Swapping soda for coffee could help people with Type 2 diabetes live longer, according to a Harvard University study.

Data was taken from 9,252 women and 3,519 men. All participants had been diagnosed with diabetes prior to the study.

High consumption of sugary drinks increased the risk of early death and heart disease in those with the condition, but coffee, tea, low-fat milk, and water showed a lower risk of early death. Each additional sugary drink serving was linked to an 8% increase in death risk. Swapping one serving out for coffee reduced the risk of death by heart disease by 20%.

“People living with diabetes should be picky about how they keep themselves hydrated,” study lead author Qi Sun said. (NY Post)
