As anticipation builds for the upcoming second season of House of the Dragon this year, George R. R. Martin remains deeply involved in expanding the Game of Thrones universe, revealing updates on his animated projects.

In a blog post titled “Amazing Animation” on December 31, 2023, Martin shared his enthusiastic recommendation for the French-American series Blue Eye Samurai, praising its “amazing action sequences and a cast of well-developed characters.” Transitioning to his own animated ventures, Martin disclosed ongoing projects in the A Song of Ice & Fire world with HBO.

While acknowledging that none of the animated projects have received the green light, Martin expressed optimism, stating, “I think we are getting close to taking the next step with a couple of them.” He recounted the initial phase of development, revealing that four animated show ideas were explored with talented individuals involved. However, two of the projects were ultimately shelved, leaving Martin hopeful of presenting those stories in alternative formats, possibly as graphic novels.

Martin also shared a shift in plans for a House of Dragon prequel titled Nine Voyages, revealing it will now be produced as an animated series rather than live action. Explaining the decision, he cited budgetary constraints that would have made a live action version financially impractical due to extensive sea-based scenes and the need for diverse port settings.

The current count stands at three animated projects in progress, and Martin concluded the post by acknowledging the uncertainty of their future. He emphasized the unpredictable nature of the entertainment industry, stating, “Nothing is certain in Hollywood. But if it does happen, with one or two or all three shows, I hope we can make them as good as gorgeous and gripping as Blue Eye Samurai. We will, for damn sure, try.”
